Welcome to Semester 2

Welcome back to Semester 2 and a new year in 2014.

We welcome several new students to Grade 6.
It has been a pleasure getting to know Chris, Grace, Mose, Emily and Christy over the last week of school.

I am so pleased with how welcoming the "old" Grade 6 students have been.

Please check the PE Page that has been updated with our new unit.

Winter Concert

On Tuesday 3rd December, students involved in Band and ensembles presented their Winter Concert to parents in the Performing Arts Centre.
This was the first concert from the Fine Arts to kick start the Christmas season.

Here is one of the pieces that the Grade 6 Band played: Winter Wonderland.

Students of the Month for November...

Congratulations to 2 students who were honoured with being Students of the Month for November.

Ethan Miller

He shows he is knowledgeable as he understands the material discussed in class. He is also able to help reinterpret this information for his classmates in a positive manner.
He is principled by making good choices consistently to take his work seriously, complete tasks to the best of his ability, yet have fun when the moment is right.
He shows he is caring by treating all class members with respect and at times sacrificing some of his own work time to help out others in need.
He demonstrates a positive risk taking spirit in new and challenging activities like the Gymnastics unit.
He gladly works with a wide variety of students, seeking advice from them and listening to their ideas in groups as well.
He shows empathy towards others, truly seeing the good in his peers and lifting up others through his encouraging words.
He is truly an asset and a positive leader in Grade 6!

Jennifer (Soo Min) Park

She is an exceedingly respectful, conscientious and a hard-working young lady showing she is principled and caring.
She puts in one hundred percent of HER effort to produce the best possible work.
She shows humility in accepting feedback and making corrections to her work. She seeks feedback independently and always gladly listens to this, applying it into her work showing she is reflective in her learning.
She is a thinker, showing persistence even when the work is challenging. She does an excellent job of staying organized and asking questions when she doesn't understand.
She has a positive energy and spirit. She pushes herself out of her comfort zone to be a risk taker in activities in gymnastics and also with her upcoming speech in Bible.
She has gained respect from her peers because of her work ethic and kindness to others. Underneath her quiet demeanour she has a very determined spirit. She has been a blessing to TCIS this year!

Health unit on Body Changes and Puberty

In the next couple of weeks Grade 6 will start a Health unit looking at Growth and Development and body changes associated with Puberty.

This is an essential Health topic treated respectfully with a Biblical view and clear information about the changes that our children will experience.

It may be useful to have a conversation with your child before this unit to help your child feel at ease.
Boys and girls together will be finding out about reproductive body parts and other body changes in puberty.

Here is a website we will use sometimes in class.

http://kidshealth.org/kid/grow/body_stuff/puberty.html#a_Time_to_Change

It contains clear and useful information for kids and teens.

It also has a section for parents:
http://kidshealth.org/parent/growth/#cat20183

Feel free to review the website and use it with your son or daughter.
We will not be looking at everything on Puberty in this website, but it is a useful resource for future information as well.

"Change" for Good

Grade 6 students have been asked to bring in coins over the next couple of weeks (until December 20).

Change for the Phillippines

From today until December 20th (last day before Christmas Break) homerooms will be in a competition to collect coins to send to Samaritan’s Purse for their work in helping with the typhoon relief in the Philippines.
(If you click on the links you will find information on what Samaritan's Purse is doing to help the typhoon victims)

How can you help?    If you have coins at home, we would love to take them as a donation.
You can send them in to school with your son or daughter in a ziplock bag to me (Mrs Pearse)and I will keep the coins safe.

Samaritan’s Purse has been on the ground helping ever since the typhoon hit.  TCIS will send our offering to them.
